While tourists flock to Croatia and Greece, the Albanian Riviera remains relatively undiscovered. This 120-kilometer stretch of Ionian coastline offers some of the Mediterranean's most pristine beaches and authentic experiences.
Saranda
The largest town on the Riviera, Saranda is a perfect base for exploration. With a beautiful promenade, excellent restaurants, and easy access to other beaches, it offers the best infrastructure for visitors.
Ksamil
Often called "Albanian Maldives," Ksamil features four small islands just offshore with water so clear you can see the bottom from meters away. It's the most popular beach destination but still far less crowded than Greek islands.
Himara
A charming town with both a beach area and an old town perched on a hill. Himara offers a more authentic Albanian experience with traditional restaurants and a slower pace of life.
Hidden Gems
- Gjipe Beach: Accessible only by boat or hiking, this secluded cove is worth the effort
- Porto Palermo: A stunning bay with a Venetian castle
- Dhermi: Long beach with excellent beach bars and restaurants
- Jale Beach: Perfect for camping and a bohemian atmosphere
Getting There
From Tirana, the Riviera is about 4-5 hours by car via the scenic Llogara Pass. Alternatively, fly to Corfu (Greece) and take a 30-minute ferry to Saranda.
Best Time to Visit
June and September offer warm weather without peak-season crowds. July and August are busiest but still manageable compared to other Mediterranean destinations.
