Gjirokastër, known as the "City of Stone," is one of Albania's most atmospheric destinations. This UNESCO World Heritage Site features remarkable Ottoman-era architecture and a massive hilltop fortress.

Gjirokastër Castle is one of the largest in the Balkans. Inside you'll find:
- A captured American spy plane from the Cold War
- An armory museum
- Stunning views over the Drino Valley
- A festival stage used for the National Folklore Festival
The Old Bazaar
Wander through cobblestone streets lined with traditional shops selling handcrafted goods, antiques, and local products. The bazaar has been a trading center for centuries.
Traditional Houses
Gjirokastër's distinctive tower houses are architectural marvels:
- Skenduli House: Beautifully preserved 300-year-old mansion
- Zekate House: Twin-towered house with original furnishings
- Ethnographic Museum: Birthplace of former dictator Enver Hoxha
Famous Residents
Gjirokastër was the birthplace of two notable figures:
- Ismail Kadare - Albania's most famous author
- Enver Hoxha - Communist leader (1944-1985)
Getting There
About 4 hours from Tirana by car. Can be combined with a trip to the Albanian Riviera as it's on the way to Saranda.
Best Time to Visit
Spring and fall are ideal. The National Folklore Festival (held every 5 years) transforms the castle into a spectacular venue.
