Kruja: The Castle of Albania's National Hero Skanderbeg

Just 30 minutes from Tirana, Kruja is one of Albania's most significant historical sites. This hilltop fortress was the stronghold of Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, who united Albanian princes to resist Ottoman conquest for 25 years.

Who Was Skanderbeg?

Gjergj Kastrioti (1405-1468), known as Skanderbeg, is Albania's national hero:

  • Taken hostage by Ottomans as a child
  • Rose to become an Ottoman military commander
  • Returned to Albania in 1443 to lead resistance
  • Successfully defended Albania for 25 years
  • Recognized by the Pope as a defender of Christianity

The Castle

Kruja Castle sits dramatically on a rocky outcrop:

  • Skanderbeg Museum: Modern museum dedicated to the hero
  • Ethnographic Museum: Traditional Albanian house
  • Teqe of Dollma: Bektashi shrine
  • Panoramic views: Stunning vistas over the plain to the sea

The Old Bazaar

Below the castle, a restored Ottoman bazaar offers:

  • Traditional crafts and souvenirs
  • Antiques and collectibles
  • Handwoven rugs and textiles
  • Local honey and raki

Getting There

Kruja is just 32 km from Tirana (about 45 minutes by car). Easy to visit as a half-day trip from the capital.

Tips for Visiting

  • Wear comfortable shoes for the cobblestone streets
  • Bargain in the bazaar - it's expected
  • Try the local specialty: roasted lamb
  • Visit early morning to avoid crowds
